Strengthening Nationalism Among Indonesian Children Across Borders: FKIP UNTAN Sociology Education Study Program Holds International Community Service Program in Thailand
The Sociology Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Tanjungpura (UNTAN), successfully organized an International Community Service (PKM) program in May 2026. Held at the Indonesian School of Bangkok (SIB), Thailand, the program focused on strengthening multicultural values based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a sociological perspective. This strategic initiative was specifically designed to nurture and revitalize national awareness among Indonesian students studying abroad, so that they maintain a strong emotional and cultural connection with their homeland.
Through a series of educational sessions and interactive discussions, the FKIP UNTAN Sociology Education academic team invited SIB students to understand Indonesia's diversity not merely as a social reality, but as a fundamental foundation of nationhood that must be preserved. A sociological perspective was used to examine how social interaction, integration, and tolerance play important roles in shaping national identity amid the dynamics of global life. In the context of the SDGs—particularly quality education and peace, justice, and strong institutions—cultivating multicultural values serves as an important foundation for students in the diaspora to appreciate differences while strengthening national unity.
High enthusiasm was shown by the students and educators of the Indonesian School of Bangkok throughout the program. The activity was not only a means of transferring academic knowledge, but also a space for cultural dialogue that revived pride in Indonesia's diversity. Through this International Community Service program, the FKIP UNTAN Sociology Education Study Program reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the university's Three Pillars of Higher Education with an impact extending to the international level. The multicultural awareness and SDG-based perspective developed through the program are expected to become valuable foundations for SIB students in maintaining the dignity and identity of the nation wherever they are.
